For five unforgettable days, an international group of tour operators, cycling tourism specialists, bloggers, media representatives and destination experts travelled from Copenhagen to Gdańsk along the Baltic Sea coast. Organised within the Baltic Biking UPGRADE (BBU) project, the fam trip offered participants a unique opportunity to experience the EuroVelo 10 Baltic Sea Cycle Route https://en.eurovelo.com/ev10 first-hand while testing a new cross-border cycling product linking Denmark and Poland.

The journey officially began on 27 May 2026 at Copenhagen City Hall, where participants were welcomed by Christopher Røhl, Mayor of Culture, Leisure and Citizen Services of the City of Copenhagen, and H.E. Ewa Dębska, Ambassador of the Republic of Poland to Denmark. Their presence highlighted the growing importance of sustainable mobility and tourism cooperation across the Baltic Sea Region.

Participants represented a diverse mix of organisations and businesses active in cycling tourism and destination promotion, including Cycle Travel Club, OneWayBikeTours, Poland by Locals, Loverowi, Cyclingworld, S-cape Partners, Kampio, Danish Cycling Tourism, Mecklenburger Radtour, Tourismverband Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, Tourismus Barth, Pomorskie Tourist Board and Zachodniopomorska Regionalna Organizacja Turystyczna. The route took participants through Denmark, Germany and Poland. Starting in Copenhagen, the group travelled south through Zealand and Falster, reaching Marielyst. The following day, they visited Gedser Odde, Denmark’s southernmost point, before taking the ferry to Rostock and continuing through Mecklenburg-Vorpommern to Barth. Subsequent stages included Stralsund, Heringsdorf, Świnoujście, Kołobrzeg, Mielno, Ustka, Krokowa, Puck, Sopot and finally Gdańsk.

One of the main objectives of the fam trip was to test a newly launched one-way bicycle rental service between Copenhagen and Gdańsk. This innovative offer was developed by two SMEs – OneWayBikeTours from Denmark and Poland by Locals from Gdańsk. The companies first met during a Baltic Biking UPGRADE study visit in Sweden in 2025. Inspired by the opportunities presented by growing cycling tourism demand, they decided to create a new tourism product allowing cyclists to start their journey in Copenhagen and finish in Gdańsk without having to return their bicycles to the original rental location. The service removes one of the key barriers to long-distance cycling holidays and opens new opportunities for discovering the Baltic coast by bike. To support the launch, a dedicated website was created: https://bike-copenhagen-gdansk.com/en/home/ . The journey was much more than a route inspection.

Participants exchanged experiences, met local stakeholders and businesses, evaluated infrastructure and services, and discussed future cooperation opportunities. The atmosphere throughout the trip was exceptional, with excellent weather, inspiring conversations and a strong sense of community among participants. The final stage through the Pomorskie Region showcased the area’s diverse cycling offerings, from coastal landscapes and nature reserves to cultural heritage sites and urban waterfronts. The group expanded over the weekend, with more cyclists joining the ride into Gdańsk. About 15 cyclists entered the city together and finished the journey at the historic Gdańsk Shipyard. The fam trip gained immediate exposure through social media, blogs, and specialised cycling channels. Participants actively shared their experiences, creating genuine content that will continue to promote the route in the coming months. The Copenhagen–Gdańsk Fam Trip illustrated how international cooperation can translate into practical tourism solutions. By linking destinations, SMEs, and cycling communities across borders, Baltic Biking UPGRADE is helping position the South Baltic area as one of Europe’s top cycling tourism regions.

The Baltic Biking UPGRADE project is co-financed by the Interreg South Baltic Programme 2021–2027.

KLAIPĖDA, LITHUANIA – The eagerly anticipated third edition of the Klaipėda Manifesto conference on the blue economy is set to take place on October 10th and 11th. This two-day event will unite a diverse assembly of political, business, and sciences leaders in a concerted effort to explore opportunities for harnessing Lithuania’s latent potential as a maritime nation and enhancing collaboration between policymakers and the maritime industry.

Eminent figures set to grace the occasion include Virginijus Sinkevičius, European Commissioner for Environment, Oceans, and Fisheries, Ole T. Horpestad, Norwegian Ambassador to Lithuania, along with other prominent government and business representatives. The conference will also host presentations by marine strategy visionaries, scientists, and innovators.

Klaipėda Manifesto, to be held at the Klaipėda Culture Factory, stands as Lithuania’s ultimate networking platform, dedicated to all-things maritime. In addition to meeting fellow maritime professionals from Lithuania and the Baltic Sea region, attendees can expect an immersive exploration of the latest developments, technologies, and opportunities within the maritime sector, ensuring they remain at the forefront of industry trends. Key topics on the agenda encompass marine energy, the transformation of the maritime industry, coastal tourism prospects, and addressing the pressing issue of global labour shortages. Organizers are optimistic that the connections forged during the conference will pave the way for innovative solutions.

“We live and work in volatile, uncertain, ambiguous and complex times, where a lack of innovative and future-proof solutions can quickly lead to the end of an organisation or business. Innovation is therefore key,” says Andrew Wrobel, Founder of Emerging Europe, a data-driven and social-impact management advisory focusing on the emerging Europe region. “The complexity of our environment and the speed of technological development demand a wide range of capabilities that are difficult to derive from a single stakeholder. Only the collaboration of multiple parties can enable partners to integrate resources, sharing knowledge to co-create and develop breakthrough solutions. Understanding and unlocking the potential of collaboration, between governments and the private sector, across borders and across industries, can lead to those breakthrough solutions. This is what I want to focus on during the Klaipėda Manifesto session.”

As nations make strides toward energy independence, the European Green Deal, and climate change mitigation targets, renewable energy takes centre stage, with offshore wind, hydrogen, and other alternative energy sources gaining prominence.

“Seaports are pivotal in realizing these goals, and Klaipėda Port is no exception. We are actively steering towards renewable energy development, and we are eager to share our progress at Klaipėda Manifesto. This event serves as an exceptional platform for sharing experiences, ideas, and fostering cross-border partnerships to achieve shared objectives,” states Algis Latakas, Director General of Klaipėda State Seaport Authority, one of the organizers of the event.

Promoting Synergy and Collaboration

Diana Manko, Head of Business at Klaipėda ID, underscores the event’s most apparent benefit – an unparalleled networking opportunity. The conference will bring together decision makers from the governmental and private sectors, policymakers and industry leaders.

“Discovering like-minded individuals, forging connections, and initiating productive collaborations are undoubtedly more accessible in a live, physical setting. This platform offers a multitude of opportunities and synergies. Participants can engage with decision-makers, potential partners, and investors during dedicated sessions and networking breaks,” she says.

The motto of Klaipėda Manifesto succinctly captures its essence: There is a lot about the future we do not know. But one thing is certain: we will live by the sea, from the sea, and of the sea.

According to the European Union’s Blue Economy Report 2022, the maritime industry, encompassing transport, ports, fishing, aquaculture, and coastal tourism, accounts for 4.45 million direct jobs in Europe and generates an annual turnover of €670 billion.

The conference is organized by Klaipėda ID, Royal Norwegian Embassy in Vilnius, the Klaipėda State Seaport Authority, in collaboration with partners including the Shipping & Offshore Network in Oslo, Klaipėda University, Association of Klaipėda Region, Klaipėda Science and Technology Park, the Norwegian-Lithuanian Chamber of Commerce, the Lithuanian Norwegian Chamber of Commerce, and the Lithuanian Maritime Cluster.

The event is supported by Ignitis Renewables, Klaipėda Free Economic Zone, KN, Lithuanian Maritime Cluster, and Norway Grants.

Euroregion “Baltic” presents the report called Entry points to EUSBSR cooperation prepared within the Umbrella 2.0. project.

The report is aimed to help all institutions directly or indirectly involved in implementing the EUSBSR to learn more about the importance of improved collaboration with the local level of governance to achieve the goals outlined in the Strategy. For two months, the experts conducted a series of 14 interviews with Coordinators of all Policy Areas of the Strategy, attempting on the one hand to gain a broad picture of the current status of local stakeholders’ participation but also to listen to interesting ideas and proposals on what should be done further to integrate them in the works of the Strategy. To this end, Euroregion “Baltic” asked several questions through which they have received a great deal of interesting feedback and some concrete proposals for the future of the EUSBSR implementation.

The resulting report is directed both towards the local stakeholders who are newcomers to the Strategy as well as those local actors who are more experienced in Baltic cooperation but would like to organize their knowledge and understanding of how the Strategy can be of use for them.

We hope that this report will help all institutions directly or indirectly involved in implementing the EUSBSR to learn more about the importance of improved collaboration with the local level of governance to achieve the goals outlined in the Strategy.

The Umbrella 2.0 project has been developed precisely to make the European Union Strategy for Baltic Sea Region (EUSBSR) more “user-friendly” for the local stakeholders. The Umbrella 2.0 project was initiated by the Euroregion Baltic (ERB) and is implemented throughout 2021 with two partners: Union of the Baltic Cities (UBC) and Baltic Sea States Subregional Cooperation (BSSSC). This project is funded by the Swedish Institute, which has supported Baltic Sea cooperation for many years, especially among the local actors. The project also builds on two previous capacity building projects successfully implemented by the Euroregion Baltic and its Partners within the Interreg South Baltic Programme.

“Sustainable Maritime Economy – BSSSC regions shaping the future of the Blue economy in the Baltic Sea Region” was the topic when about 130 participants from the Baltic Sea Region gathered for the 27th BSSSC Annual Conference in Klaipeda, Lithuania.

The Annual Conference began with welcoming words by Vytautas Grubliauskas, Mayor of Klaipėda City, stressing the importance of the blue economy for the maritime city of Klaipeda. He was followed by Lithuanian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Mr. Vytautas Naudužas, Ambassador at large, who emphasized the need to a larger extent implementing the EU Strategy for the Baltic Sea Region. The third speaker, Bernd Hemingway, Deputy Director General, Council of the Baltic Sea States (CBSS) emphasized the good cooperation between BSSSC and CBSS to implement policies on all levels, especially highlighting the work on youth and the sustainable development goals (SDGs).

– The BSSSC is an important and reliable partner in the field of youth, and we are thankful for the extraordinary initiative to create a youth platform coordinated by the CBSS Secretariat, which was also discussed in both formats mentioned, said Mr. Hemningway.

The Annual Conference was officially opened by BSSSC Chairman Roger Ryberg ringing the BSSSC bell. Seeing this is the last Annual Conference of the Norwegian Chairmanship of the BSSSC, Mr. Ryberg took the opportunity to reflect on the most important issues through the last two and a half years. Mr. Ryberg highlighted the continuous lobbying to protect the interest of the regions (especially considering cohesion policy and funding mechanisms), the work on youth integration and the promotion of the implementation of the SDGs.

Future of the EUSBSR

One of the issues discussed at the Annual Conference was the future of the EU Strategy for the Baltic Sea Region. Helena Tuuri, Chair of the National Coordinator Group, EU Strategy for the Baltic Sea Region (EUSBSR), Finland, was invited to introduce the priorities of the Finnish presidency of the Council of the EU, and the revision of the EUSBSR. She said there are four areas where the strategy should be improved.

1. There is not enough political visibility and support.

2. The document is too long (176 pages) with 12 sub-objectives, 13 Policy Areas and 4 Horizontal Areas – simplification is needed.

3. Governance in general unclear and complicated – it is based on strict interpretation of the original 3 ’Nos’ (no budget line, no new instructions, no new legislation)

4. There are no real indicators included in the Policy areas/Horizontal actions, meaning the strategy is difficult to measure

She said, however, that the strategy is working well in many sectors, that there have been concrete results and that there is a multi-level action and commitment to the strategy. The timetable for updating the strategy is pressured by the multi-annual financial framework discussions of the EU and that the new strategy would most probably be in place in the beginning of 2020.

A sustainable future for the Baltic Sea

Ms. Tuuri joined the following panel debate alongside Elena Kolosova (Interreg BSR Programme), Angela Schultz-Zehden (Submariner network), Ossi Savolainen (Helsinki – Uusimaa Region/BSSSC Board member) and Darius Daunys (Vice-Rector for Research and Innovation of Klaipėda University). In the debate they discussed the Blue economy impact on the Baltic Sea Region. Mr. Savolainen emphasised simplicity and a clearer vision to reach a sustainable BSR.

– We need a common vision and a common mission, and then the will to reach it. There are too many complicated strategies and solutions. What are the main challenges to achieve clean shipping, green shipping and blue growth?

Mr. Daunys said that the change is happening, but not fast enough.

Tour Operator Summit in Vienna/Austria, 24.01.2018

With the aim to increase visibility of the Baltic Sea region and to contribute to the growth of the share of international visitors to the BSR, the BSTC project starts its Smart Destination Campaign in the source markets Austria and the United Kingdom. The campaign addresses potential visitors, tour operators and media by using various channels.

As the project developed new tourism products last year that can now be found on the website www.balticsea.travel, the marketing campaign shall contribute to their further promotion and help to spread the word of the BSR as a diverse destination worth a visit not only in summer but also during off-season. The campaign addresses potential visitors, tour operators (TO’s) and media by using various channels.

Tour Operator Summits

On 24 January 2019, the first BSTC Tour Operator Summit took place in Vienna/Austria. 50 key Austrian multipliers, such as tour operators and media representatives, visited the B2B event at the Hilton Vienna Danube Waterfront Hotel. The workshops and presentations aimed at marketing the BSTC tourism products, their service providers and the BSR as an attractive travel destination. The service providers from Denmark, Lithuania, Poland and Germany showed immense interest in improving cooperation and collaboration between the regions and were actively involved in the presentations at the summit.

Following an internal workshop for tour operators in Gdansk last October, the BSTC will additionally be attending this year’s CITY Fair in London from 16-18 June 2019. Organised by the ETOA (European Tour Operator Association), it gives European destination suppliers from more than 25 EU countries the opportunity to meet selected tour operators, online intermediaries, wholesalers and MICE specialists. The BSTC will use the B2B event to talk to Tour Operators at up to 32 pre-arranged one-to-one meetings.

All summits are accompanied by media cooperation with TO’s and online marketing elements in the upcoming months to improve the dissemination and to bring about a travel decision by end-consumers. Therefore, the media packages shall be wide-coverage, comprehensive and target-group specific, and focus on image advertising of all partner regions as well as the BSR as travel destination.

Street Promotion

Additionally, the BSTC project partners are currently organising two B2C promotion campaigns in both source markets to directly address potential Baltic Sea visitors. During a two-day period in May 2019, guests of the mall Shopping City South (SCS) in Vienna can immerse themselves in the relaxing and varied world of the Baltic Sea region. With the slogan “Take a break”, the Baltic Sea Tourism Center presents its tourism destinations on an area of 90m² and offers the perfect diversion from a stressful shopping day. BSR-Impressions are shown on video screen, while the guests can enjoy a culinary excursion to the Baltic Sea countries and relax in wicker beach chairs. A photo booth provides a souvenir of the day and interested parties receive detailed information on the partner countries.

A second street promotion campaign is organised in London this year. Innovative marketing tools will attract a great deal of attention and offer travel occasions to the Baltic Sea region.

Study Visits

Furthermore, the project is implementing diverse study visits to the partner regions and their products. Tour Operators and media representatives are invited for tours to the Baltic Sea region. Several round trips provide unique experiences on the variety of tourism offers as well as newly established products and services. The trips lead along the Baltic Sea coast through the countries of Lithuania, Poland and Germany and Denmark. They highlight how varied this contiguous region can be and what it has to offer especially for British and Austrian travellers.

Further information on the products developed in the BSTC partner countries Lithuania, Poland, Denmark and Germany, visit: https://balticsea.travel/

Since several years, a group of like-minded partners is actively involved in strengthening the common framework for tourism in the Baltic Sea region. One result is the continuous and successful work of implementing the Baltic Sea Tourism Center (BSTC) – a leading Center of Expertise for improved communication and cooperation in the BSR.

Following the profile development, the BSTC network and business plan are currently being evaluated and further developed. Due to two online presences (www.bstc.eu and www.balticsea.travel), the visibility of the project and the future BSTC has been increased.

Most recently, four expert groups were formed under the Center’s Core Competencies Partnerships, Insights and Skills. In order to improve communication between tourism actors within and outside the Baltic Sea region, the Expert Group Policy Area will continue to support the work of the policy area tourism of the EU Baltic Sea Strategy as a steering group. The expert group aims at intensifying lobby work and communication on macro-regional level as well as refining the annual Baltic Sea Tourism Forum as the most important exchange platform for cross-border cooperation in the Baltic Sea region.

The Expert Group Market Research focuses on the collection of touristic data of all Baltic Sea countries and the release of annual reports at the Baltic Sea Tourism Forum. The first Market Report was presented on 15.11.2018 in Riga. In addition to market data, a trend report on future developments in the Baltic Sea region is to be published next year. In future, both reports will serve as the basis for political and strategic recommendations for action and provide further impetus for international cooperation.

The main task of the Expert Group Training Offerings will be the organisation and further development of trainings and seminars in the field of product development. The group will increasingly concentrate on topics such as internationalisation, season extension and sustainability. The activities aim primarily at tourism companies and projects.

Among other things, the Expert Group Sustainable Tourism will work on a concept for establishing a Sustainable Tourism Award (STA) at macro-regional level in the Baltic Sea region and implement it together with the member states of the EU Strategy for the Baltic Sea Region. In addition, the expert group is to promote measures that make a significant contribution to achieving the sustainable development goals of the United Nations.

The upcoming year marks the beginning of more permanent tourism cooperation patterns in the Baltic Sea region under the roof of the EUSBSR flagship. The BSTC is scheduled to officially start work on the 12th Baltic Sea Tourism Forum in autumn 2019.
