For five unforgettable days, an international group of tour operators, cycling tourism specialists, bloggers, media representatives and destination experts travelled from Copenhagen to Gdańsk along the Baltic Sea coast. Organised within the Baltic Biking UPGRADE (BBU) project, the fam trip offered participants a unique opportunity to experience the EuroVelo 10 Baltic Sea Cycle Route https://en.eurovelo.com/ev10 first-hand while testing a new cross-border cycling product linking Denmark and Poland.

The journey officially began on 27 May 2026 at Copenhagen City Hall, where participants were welcomed by Christopher Røhl, Mayor of Culture, Leisure and Citizen Services of the City of Copenhagen, and H.E. Ewa Dębska, Ambassador of the Republic of Poland to Denmark. Their presence highlighted the growing importance of sustainable mobility and tourism cooperation across the Baltic Sea Region.

Participants represented a diverse mix of organisations and businesses active in cycling tourism and destination promotion, including Cycle Travel Club, OneWayBikeTours, Poland by Locals, Loverowi, Cyclingworld, S-cape Partners, Kampio, Danish Cycling Tourism, Mecklenburger Radtour, Tourismverband Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, Tourismus Barth, Pomorskie Tourist Board and Zachodniopomorska Regionalna Organizacja Turystyczna. The route took participants through Denmark, Germany and Poland. Starting in Copenhagen, the group travelled south through Zealand and Falster, reaching Marielyst. The following day, they visited Gedser Odde, Denmark’s southernmost point, before taking the ferry to Rostock and continuing through Mecklenburg-Vorpommern to Barth. Subsequent stages included Stralsund, Heringsdorf, Świnoujście, Kołobrzeg, Mielno, Ustka, Krokowa, Puck, Sopot and finally Gdańsk.

One of the main objectives of the fam trip was to test a newly launched one-way bicycle rental service between Copenhagen and Gdańsk. This innovative offer was developed by two SMEs – OneWayBikeTours from Denmark and Poland by Locals from Gdańsk. The companies first met during a Baltic Biking UPGRADE study visit in Sweden in 2025. Inspired by the opportunities presented by growing cycling tourism demand, they decided to create a new tourism product allowing cyclists to start their journey in Copenhagen and finish in Gdańsk without having to return their bicycles to the original rental location. The service removes one of the key barriers to long-distance cycling holidays and opens new opportunities for discovering the Baltic coast by bike. To support the launch, a dedicated website was created: https://bike-copenhagen-gdansk.com/en/home/ . The journey was much more than a route inspection.

Participants exchanged experiences, met local stakeholders and businesses, evaluated infrastructure and services, and discussed future cooperation opportunities. The atmosphere throughout the trip was exceptional, with excellent weather, inspiring conversations and a strong sense of community among participants. The final stage through the Pomorskie Region showcased the area’s diverse cycling offerings, from coastal landscapes and nature reserves to cultural heritage sites and urban waterfronts. The group expanded over the weekend, with more cyclists joining the ride into Gdańsk. About 15 cyclists entered the city together and finished the journey at the historic Gdańsk Shipyard. The fam trip gained immediate exposure through social media, blogs, and specialised cycling channels. Participants actively shared their experiences, creating genuine content that will continue to promote the route in the coming months. The Copenhagen–Gdańsk Fam Trip illustrated how international cooperation can translate into practical tourism solutions. By linking destinations, SMEs, and cycling communities across borders, Baltic Biking UPGRADE is helping position the South Baltic area as one of Europe’s top cycling tourism regions.

The Baltic Biking UPGRADE project is co-financed by the Interreg South Baltic Programme 2021–2027.

KLAIPĖDA, LITHUANIA – The eagerly anticipated third edition of the Klaipėda Manifesto conference on the blue economy is set to take place on October 10th and 11th. This two-day event will unite a diverse assembly of political, business, and sciences leaders in a concerted effort to explore opportunities for harnessing Lithuania’s latent potential as a maritime nation and enhancing collaboration between policymakers and the maritime industry.

Eminent figures set to grace the occasion include Virginijus Sinkevičius, European Commissioner for Environment, Oceans, and Fisheries, Ole T. Horpestad, Norwegian Ambassador to Lithuania, along with other prominent government and business representatives. The conference will also host presentations by marine strategy visionaries, scientists, and innovators.

Klaipėda Manifesto, to be held at the Klaipėda Culture Factory, stands as Lithuania’s ultimate networking platform, dedicated to all-things maritime. In addition to meeting fellow maritime professionals from Lithuania and the Baltic Sea region, attendees can expect an immersive exploration of the latest developments, technologies, and opportunities within the maritime sector, ensuring they remain at the forefront of industry trends. Key topics on the agenda encompass marine energy, the transformation of the maritime industry, coastal tourism prospects, and addressing the pressing issue of global labour shortages. Organizers are optimistic that the connections forged during the conference will pave the way for innovative solutions.

“We live and work in volatile, uncertain, ambiguous and complex times, where a lack of innovative and future-proof solutions can quickly lead to the end of an organisation or business. Innovation is therefore key,” says Andrew Wrobel, Founder of Emerging Europe, a data-driven and social-impact management advisory focusing on the emerging Europe region. “The complexity of our environment and the speed of technological development demand a wide range of capabilities that are difficult to derive from a single stakeholder. Only the collaboration of multiple parties can enable partners to integrate resources, sharing knowledge to co-create and develop breakthrough solutions. Understanding and unlocking the potential of collaboration, between governments and the private sector, across borders and across industries, can lead to those breakthrough solutions. This is what I want to focus on during the Klaipėda Manifesto session.”

As nations make strides toward energy independence, the European Green Deal, and climate change mitigation targets, renewable energy takes centre stage, with offshore wind, hydrogen, and other alternative energy sources gaining prominence.

“Seaports are pivotal in realizing these goals, and Klaipėda Port is no exception. We are actively steering towards renewable energy development, and we are eager to share our progress at Klaipėda Manifesto. This event serves as an exceptional platform for sharing experiences, ideas, and fostering cross-border partnerships to achieve shared objectives,” states Algis Latakas, Director General of Klaipėda State Seaport Authority, one of the organizers of the event.

Promoting Synergy and Collaboration

Diana Manko, Head of Business at Klaipėda ID, underscores the event’s most apparent benefit – an unparalleled networking opportunity. The conference will bring together decision makers from the governmental and private sectors, policymakers and industry leaders.

“Discovering like-minded individuals, forging connections, and initiating productive collaborations are undoubtedly more accessible in a live, physical setting. This platform offers a multitude of opportunities and synergies. Participants can engage with decision-makers, potential partners, and investors during dedicated sessions and networking breaks,” she says.

The motto of Klaipėda Manifesto succinctly captures its essence: There is a lot about the future we do not know. But one thing is certain: we will live by the sea, from the sea, and of the sea.

According to the European Union’s Blue Economy Report 2022, the maritime industry, encompassing transport, ports, fishing, aquaculture, and coastal tourism, accounts for 4.45 million direct jobs in Europe and generates an annual turnover of €670 billion.

The conference is organized by Klaipėda ID, Royal Norwegian Embassy in Vilnius, the Klaipėda State Seaport Authority, in collaboration with partners including the Shipping & Offshore Network in Oslo, Klaipėda University, Association of Klaipėda Region, Klaipėda Science and Technology Park, the Norwegian-Lithuanian Chamber of Commerce, the Lithuanian Norwegian Chamber of Commerce, and the Lithuanian Maritime Cluster.

The event is supported by Ignitis Renewables, Klaipėda Free Economic Zone, KN, Lithuanian Maritime Cluster, and Norway Grants.

Euroregion “Baltic” presents the report called Entry points to EUSBSR cooperation prepared within the Umbrella 2.0. project.

The report is aimed to help all institutions directly or indirectly involved in implementing the EUSBSR to learn more about the importance of improved collaboration with the local level of governance to achieve the goals outlined in the Strategy. For two months, the experts conducted a series of 14 interviews with Coordinators of all Policy Areas of the Strategy, attempting on the one hand to gain a broad picture of the current status of local stakeholders’ participation but also to listen to interesting ideas and proposals on what should be done further to integrate them in the works of the Strategy. To this end, Euroregion “Baltic” asked several questions through which they have received a great deal of interesting feedback and some concrete proposals for the future of the EUSBSR implementation.

The resulting report is directed both towards the local stakeholders who are newcomers to the Strategy as well as those local actors who are more experienced in Baltic cooperation but would like to organize their knowledge and understanding of how the Strategy can be of use for them.

We hope that this report will help all institutions directly or indirectly involved in implementing the EUSBSR to learn more about the importance of improved collaboration with the local level of governance to achieve the goals outlined in the Strategy.

The Umbrella 2.0 project was initiated by the Euroregion Baltic (ERB) and is implemented throughout 2021 with two partners: Union of the Baltic Cities (UBC) and Baltic Sea States Subregional Cooperation (BSSSC). This project is funded by the Swedish Institute, which has supported Baltic Sea cooperation for many years, especially among the local actors. The project also builds on two previous capacity building projects successfully implemented by the Euroregion Baltic and its Partners within the Interreg South Baltic Programme.

On the 11th of March, on the Lithuania Independence Restoration Day, the port city will host an opening event, which will announce the beginning of the European Youth Capital 2021 program. This title, which has been awaited for a couple of years, was taken over from the French city of Amiens. The project consists of nine platforms presenting young people’s ideas, challenges and problems, such as weak political activism, an aging city, the avoidance of “inconvenient” topics and people, and the lack of an environment which would foster entrepreneurship and creativity.

In the 2021 program there will be 67 events, 70 various organizations, 133 ambassadors not only from many European countries, but also from such distant countries as Pakistan, Hawaii, and India. The title won is an extraordinary opportunity not only for young people but also for the city itself, to attract the attention of European youth, to present the city in an international context, and to strengthen the identity of European youth.

“Young people, their thoughts and ideas are the driving force behind every city. As long as young, energetic people care about their city, every city has a bright future. I would like to thank the youth of Klaipėda, all the ambassadors and friends of the project, whose insightful view not only of the advantages of Klaipėda, but also of sensitive topics, brought this honorable title to the city. I believe that together we can give Klaipėda an even bigger youthful drive. This year, let Klaipėda become an exceptionally open city that hears and listens, and in which people of all cultures, views and groups feel good,” Vytautas Grubliauskas, the Mayor of Klaipėda, said.

Challenges, achievements, potential

The title of the European Youth Capital is awarded to the city in two cases – when the city wants to share good practices, or when the city dares to identify its problems relevant to the young people and takes a more active approach. Klaipėda was awarded the title in the latter way. Unlike many of the titles the city has held, the main goal of the European Youth Capital is to create a city where the young person feels heard and needed.

According to the project idea, Klaipėda will implement a complex program set out in nine platforms, which consist of the problems, achievements and expectations identified by the youth. Among the challenges raised by the project are weak political literacy of young people, lack of an environment which would foster entrepreneurship and creativity, avoidance of “inconvenient” topics and people, and an aging city.

Even though the global pandemic has adjusted the original project plans, number of events and budget, many of the key events have remained and been successfully carried out throughout the past year.

“Until the beginning of the summer, all events in the program will take place remotely, using smart technologies, interacting and communicating over a safe distance. Since much of the events, such as lectures, discussions, are aimed at certain target audiences, which include several, sometimes several hundred people, remote events take place successfully,” Greta Meškauskienė, Manager of the European Youth Capital 2021 project, said.

850.000 Euros are planned for the European Youth Capital events. This money will be used to organize close to seventy events, including the opening and closing ceremonies of the European Youth Capital, various debates, and initiatives.

Exceptional events

The European Youth Capital program includes close to 70 events, discussions, initiatives and actions. A large part of the project events is dedicated to clearly defined target audiences – schoolchildren, students, socially sensitive groups. The program highlights seven major events – the international festival-workshop “BeachArt”, the exclusive international 3D street drawing festival “Art Gates”, the contemporary art and ancient traditions festival “Gabya”, community meetings “Sleep Under the Stars”, the youth cooperation initiative “Youth Picnic”, the mega concert of the most famous Lithuanian LGBT+ friendly and LGBT+ music stars. The program also includes various sports events – “Non-traditional sports festival”, “Sports festival” (surfing tournament, skateboard and break dance competitions).

The Open Yyouth Space that will open its doors on Paryžiaus Komunos street will also be a gift for young people. This will be the second youth center in Klaipėda. The Open Youth Space on Paryžiaus Komunos street, in the reconstructed Football School, is due to open in May.

ALL YEAR ROUND EVENTS: Creating attractive urban spaces “I am not just a wall”; A cycle of success stories for young entrepreneurs on Youtube; The “Exhibition of 3D drawings and creative space” will take place throughout the summer.

EVENTS IN SPRING: School Forum; Youth Ambassadors Forum; Cultural event: Ukraine; Symposium on LGBT+ friendly youth policy making.

EVENTS IN SUMMER: Youth Summer Academy; Sports festival; International workshop “New stories of unattractive spaces”; International youth camp in Ukraine; International festival of creativity; International festival-workshop “BeachArt”; Festival of contemporary art and ancient traditions “Gabya”; International conference on sustainable development; Mega concert of the most famous Lithuanian LGBT+ friendly and LGBT+ music stars; Non-traditional sports festival.

EVENTS IN AUTUMN: Community meeting “Sleep Under the Stars”; Youth picnic; Congress of youth workers; International forum “Integration of People with Disabilities in Educational Institutions: Where We Are and Where We Should Be”; Youth Ambassadors Forum; Entrepreneurship event “Youth-for-Youth”.

YOUTH CHALLENGES IN NINE PLATFORMS

The problems and ideas of young people are presented in nine platforms: “Dialogues”, “Solidarity”, “Leadership”, “Out of the box”, “Spaces”, “Colours”, “North-South”, “Connections”, “Potential”.

The “Dialogues” platform promotes social involvement, presents the idea of Klaipėda youth political literacy, its increase, opportunities to participate in the political life of Klaipėda, the debate culture. The main event of the platform is the YOUTH AMBASSADORS FORUM. It is a strategic initiative to strengthen the voice of young people by giving them the space, tools, opportunities and support to engage and participate in civic processes. The Forum will act as an alliance of local youth and youth organizations, working closely with and meeting regularly with policy makers. The platform also includes the Choose Klaipėda Ambassadors Initiative, which currently brings together 133 ambassadors – people who want to contribute to the implementation of project activities and seek real change in Klaipėda. The platform is implemented by Klaipėda University and KU Student Union.

“Solidarity” is a platform that changes the image of volunteers and volunteering. The platform is implemented by the AUK Center together with LCC, the Lithuanian Maritime Museum, and the Spiritual Support Center for Youth. Among the most important events of the year – the Humanitarian Camp in Ukraine (LCC) and the Lithuanian Maritime Museum events – the School Forum and EXPERIENCE, HEAR, DISCOVER YOURSELF AS THE SEA. The latter event is scheduled for June 8th. On the occasion of the World Ocean Day, the event on Smiltynė Beach will unite about 2,000 students. The topic of the event ‘getting to know the Baltic Sea’ is best described by 3 concepts – young, closed, polluted. This is an opportunity to talk about the most sensitive issues – the isolation of young people and their internal “pollution”.

The “Leadership” platform is a platform for entrepreneurship and innovative business ideas. The main event of the platform, “Youth for Youth 2021”, will take place in November. The event, which became very popular, took place for the first time in 2020, so it is expected for the event to gain continuity. Implemented by the Lithuanian Business College.

“Out of the box” is a platform for different, unusual ideas. The most important event of the platform is the Creativity Festival on July 11, which will show how to create for a city and find ways to turn ideas into reality. The platform is implemented by “Klaipėdos šventės”.

“Spaces” – transformation of spaces for young people, provision of safe spaces for young people. The most important event of the platform is the BEACH ART festival, which will contribute to innovative solutions for revitalizing urban spaces. Implemented by “Creators76”.

The “Colors” platform, which deals with “taboo” topics, is intended for reducing exclusion, raising awareness, and increasing the sense of security of excluded young people. The platform’s events touch sensitive topics, from LGBT to the integration of people with disabilities. The main event is a symposium dedicated to the creation of LGBT+ friendly youth policy-making.

The “North-South” platform emphasizes the importance of urban decentralization and the need to move some events, cultural initiatives from the city center to other parts of the city, and to involve peripheral communities. Highlights of the platform: the ‘newborn’ festival “GABYA” which will take place on 16-18 July. The festival will become a bridge between the past and the present – ancient traditions, heritage, ethno and world music, contemporary art and modern electronic harmony. Among the exclusive events of the platform and the festival “ART GATES”, which will take place on 21-28 June, and the festival “CITY STARS”, which will happen on 4 September. The platform is implemented by: College of Social Sciences, “Creators76”, “Spotas” and other partners.

“Connections” is a horizontal platform responsible for promoting cooperation between various international and national institutions and organizations, and project ambassadors. This ensures that cooperation will continue in the future.

The “Potential” platform is responsible for involving young people in all stages of the design and implementation of the program, while strengthening youth organizations so that the voice of young people is heard in every activity.

The title of the European Youth Capital was brought by the port city youth for the first time not only to Lithuania, but also to Northern Europe, although the initiative of youth capitals started more than a decade ago. The competition is organized by the European Youth Forum. Over 500 young people were involved in preparing the program application. Currently, the #chooseKlaipeda ambassadors network brings together over 100 young people from outside youth organizations.
